What New Leadership In Albany Means for Medical Cannabis Patients Dateline: Aug. 27, 2021
New York experienced a significant power shift in recent weeks after Governor Andrew Cuomo resigned in the face of a sexual harassment scandal and was replaced by Kathy Hochul - the first woman governor in the state’s history.
Gov. Hochul has pledged to change how Albany does business. There are positive signs this means long-stalled changes to the medical cannabis program will finally move forward, bringing much-needed equity and affordability to patients like you all across the state.
Indeed, the new governor has indicated that breaking the logjam on appointments to the new Cannabis Control Board – a must in order to advance the adult-use program – is a “priority.”
NYMICA members continue to strongly advocate for the implementation of key improvements to the Medical Cannabis Program, all of which are outlined in the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act that passed at the end of March.
1) Physicians are empowered to exercise their discretion to determine whether a patient might benefit from medical cannabis.
2) Supply limits for medical cannabis have increased under the law from 30 to 60 days.
3) The sale of whole-flower is allowed in medical cannabis dispensaries.
4) Governor Hochul must appoint the board members and staffers to the new cannabis regulatory body; without an active regulatory body the medical program continues to face administrative challenges and the adult-use program cannot launch.
Patients have suffered and waited far too long for these simple improvements to New York’s needlessly restrictive medical cannabis program.
Thanks to your tireless advocacy and support, we can see a light at the end of the tunnel.
We will be updating you on our progress and maybe calling on you in the coming weeks to help get this over the finish line.
Many thanks,
