Erotic Novels

Even the title of this post is deceptive. They weren't novels. That implies they had some literary value. Those paperbacks of the 1950' thru the 70's were smut, pure and simple. I first ran across one in my Dad's stuff and was instantly hooked. In one or two pages the author was describing anatomy or a sexual act in lurid detail. There was always a loose plot or story line. But honestly, it was all about the sex. If you believe that the mind is the greatest sexual organ, then that's why these could be so appealing. As the books talked about, "a pulsating thick hard cock plunging like a pile driver into a slippery hairy creamy slit as the big titted babe moaned and writhed in waves of ecstasy," these images all played out in my mind as I pounded away on my boner. I wonder about the folks that actually wrote these books. If my sources are correct, man were in England. Leave it to the Brits with their ingenuity to make a living off my unbridled horniness.

As a young fella, there was a magazine store or news-stand in town that sold these literary masterpieces. They were down on the far end of the shelf with the Playboys and other men's magazines. Since I was too young to be allowed there, I figured out they were just past the hunting and fishing magazines. I was a crafty little bastard back then and would go into the store and ask, "Do you have Field and Stream?" and the sales guy would direct me to the far end of the rack. I would feast my eyes on the smut and vicariously soak it all in. Once I was called out when the clerk said, "Hey k**, you've been down there too long, either buy something or leave." The guy had probably seen that tactic before and knew were to run off the horny k**. I thought I was so smart.

A serious book by William Bradford Huie was called Mamie Stover. I stumbled across this in the house and believe it belonged to my Dad. It told the story of a woman who was a prostitute in Hawaii in WW2. She had something called the bullpen were she could service large numbers of GI's per day. A prep lady would get the fellas hard them slap a rubber on them and in came Mamie and after a couple of thrusts they popped and she was off to the next room. Evidently this was a true story since Huie was a pretty renowned newspaper guy in the 50's. I probably jerked off 100 times to that book. I still have it - a pleasant memory of lost youth.

They often themed the subjects. There were i****t books, b**stiality (sorry, I found those pretty disgusting), bondage in all it's variations, and much more. Lot's were gay themes and that's where I was first introduced to lesbians. Holy shit - that was really fun to fantasize about. I remember being introduced to The Story of O. The person who told me about that classic volume, said, "You'll be jerking off every other page," which was not too far from the truth. As a teen, I could get lost in these books and loved every one I read. In the 9th Gr@de someone had the book, Candy, at school and loaned to to me. I remember putting it inside my science book in class as not to risk getting caught. Then - Boom, I got caught. The teacher said, "Hey what are you reading?" When he confis**ted it and said, "Candy - I read that last year and couldn't put it down," then he handed it back to me. That taught me there was a brotherhood of horny dudes that went beyond my immediate peers. The plot of Candy was that she was a nympho that couldn't get enough dick - now that's a story that I can motivate me to take matters in my hand and work out a solution....

The cover art was really provocative. In the 50's and early 60's there was a definite style that was less explicit. But at some point they got more daring. Some were line drawings while others appeared to my untrained eye to be water colors. I'm sure they were as hastily produced as they were written. But looking back the lurid cover was a huge part of their appeal. A entire series had a green border on the cover - those were the ones that had the line art covers. It was Liverpool Library Press

And then there were the titles - here's some just for fun:
Swap Seducers, Sucked Into Sin, Tart of the Town, Lights, Camera...Passion, Pleasure Island, Titty, Titty, Gangbang, Hazels Harem - there are thousands.

There are couple of web sites that have captured this wonderful part of our erotic history. If you are interested check out greenleaf classic books dot com. I have found some via another site and are posting a couple for my old "horn-dog" friends who may find them a trip down memory lane. Another place to find them is at vintage sleeze dot com. I wish I could find a web source for the cover art since they were such a big part of their allure.

Today, I love to listen to them. I have a simple text to voice program and can load the text from a source (such as Xhamster posts) and play it through the sound system. I have to admit, they don't get me as hard as they did back when I first used them to get a aroused, but they are lots of fun.

I would love to hear other persons thoughts on these books.

I have read some more on the Revolt of Mamie Stover a d its author. The more I have read, the more prescient the author seems to be. You could argue that every O F content provider nowadays is a descendant of Mamie  This is what happened to Mamie Stover, a six-foot tall girl from Mississippi, with a shock of yellow hair and a determination to get rich and respectable. She won a beauty contest, got tossed out of Hollywood and landed in Honolulu, where with the assistance of a war and the U.S. Army she made her pile -- and an indelible impression on thousands of American army men. Here is a vivid, angry novel that exposes the decadence that produces girls like Mamie Stover.William Bradford Huie was an American writer, investigative reporter, editor, national lecturer, and television host. His credits include 21 books that sold over 30 million copies worldwide. In addition to writing 14 bestsellers, he wrote hundreds of articles that appeared in all of the major magazines and newspapers of the day. Huie wrote several books about controversial topics related to World War II and the Civil Rights Movement. Six of Huie's books were adapted as feature films during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.Huie was a novelist and a journalist. When the Emmett Till accused were found innocent by a white jury in Mississippi, he interviewed them. To him they admitted their guilt and the story was published in Look magazine. The Revolt of Mamie Stover reads like journalism. The book is written in first person by a character who is a novelist. He meets Stover on the ship going to Hawaii. She develops trust in him and won't let him out of her life. Working girls in Hawaii at that time were governed by specific rules stating where they could live, where they could go, how their money was to be handled, what property they could own, etc. Stover used her friend to get around some of these rules. She wasn't allowed to bank money, but with his help she did. The author noted that they were the only people working for profit who were told to make less money during wartime but to do more work.) Her business was done only with enlisted men but her free time was spent only with officers. Using the influence and power of high-ranking military men, she went on to break more of these rules. The real Jean O'Hara broke the same rules. Mamie became wealthy in real estate with her friend's help. Jean O'Hara became wealthy by buying real estate, letting the neighbors know who owned it, and waiting for them to buy her out at a considerable profit, which they did.

The narrator of "Mamie Stover," a Southern journalist named James Monroe Madison, doubtless speaks for Huie himself: "I have little patience with the generality that all mankind is tragic; that men-in-the-mass are important or valuable. I believe that each individual must prove himself valuable. I believe that mankind is composed of individuals who are valuable and individuals who are worthless. I believe there are individuals whose souls can be nourished and developed, and there are others whose souls are desiccated. . . . I believe that there is an aristocracy among men -- an aristocracy of will, work, intelligence, and character. I believe that these aristocrats, these valuable individuals of the world are important, worthy to be free, and worthy of opportunity and aid, but that others are relatively unimportant."

to LYL6278 : I never read that one. I vaguely recall someone saying something about it and I thought it was a book about flying phobia (I was really naïve). Had I known it would have been another jack-off-book

I never noticed erotic novels at news stands growing up. Maybe they didn't have them in my hometown? Too bad for me. There was always Playboy and Penthouse, but no novels. But I do know the film "Mamie Stover", with Jane Russell. She was something else! But how cool was your science teacher? I had a gym teacher who busted me with a Playboy centerfold in the fifth grade. He kept it and I got suspended for a day.

to ErosUndaunted : Agree with all you've said but would add, if internet porn had materialized when I was a teen, I likely  would never have finished school - let alone got a job.

Lovely sense of nostalgia to this. For me it was never novels, though I remember my eyes lingering on the 'top shelf' in news agents. And of course, as a lad, the days when I would find a 'stroke book' abandoned in a hedgerow or roadside. Happy days. Youngsters nowadays don't know how lucky they are. If internet porn had suddenly magically materialised for me as a youngster, my head would have exploded.
