Why most of the porn I watch is lesbian porn
I was recently asked if I only watch lesbian porn. I've spent a good bit of time since thinking about what porn I watch and why. I've never considered myself to be much of a writer but I'm going to try anyway.
First, let me define a few terms as I will use them. Lesbian sex is sex with two women. Straight sex (and I'm not wild about the term because of its implication that non-straight sex is twisted) but I'll use it anyway, is sex with a man and a woman. Threesome sex is sex among one man and two women. Lesbian threesome sex is sex among three women. I have no interest in male homosexual sex and almost no interest in sex among two men and one woman or sex with more than three participants.
For me, there are two main mindsets when watching porn: If I'm watching sex with only women in it, I become a voyeur and imagine that I'm watching either with or without the knowledge and/or consent of the participants. Sometimes I'll change this perspective during the scene; sometimes not. If I'm watching a scene with a man in it, I may use the above voyeuristic mindset but, more often, I put myself in the place of the male participant. I'm not sure what to call this but perhaps participatory will do.
I would guess that at least 80% of the porn that I watch is lesbian or, less often, lesbian threesome and 20% or less is straight or threesome. And the question is why is this. My answer falls into three categories.
I like looking at (and, of course, touching) women. Women are beautiful, curvy, and soft. It sometimes amazes me that there is such a thing as a straight woman - women are just so much hotter than men. Watching two (or sometimes three) provides that much more opportunity to focus on whatever I choose at the moment (facial expressions, sexual touching, body position, parts of the body, etc.)
Straight porn is almost always about the penis and the male orgasm. Usually, minimal attention is paid to the woman's pleasure and, once intercourse begins, it's rarely interrupted unless it's for another opportunity for the woman to give oral sex to the man. And once the man cums, the scene is usually over. I defy anyone to give me an example of a straight scene in which the scene doesn't end until the woman has cum as many times as she can and is just sexually worn out. Indeed, I can remember a scene from My Mom's Hot Friend with Julia Ann and Mr. Pete in which after he cums in her mouth, he enters her and the scene goes on for several more minutes. She is astonished that he is continuing. That's how rare this is. The only actress that I can think of who cums more than once in straight porn is Lily Carter and we all know how often and easily she can cum!
In most straight porn, the only change is position (missionary, doggie, cowgirl, etc.). Why not interrupt the intercourse so the man can go down on the woman? Why not slow down the scene and do some kissing or caressing before resuming the intercourse? Women like kissing, at least if it's done well. So, why is there no straight version of the Kiss Me Girl series? Why don't women spend time playing with the man's body (nipples, neck, etc.) instead of going right to the penis? All of these things, that make sex sensual, exciting, and fun are common in lesbian porn but rare or unheard of in straight porn.
When Nica Noelle started the Sweet Sinner series, I had hoped that some of these issues would be addressed but, although she added plots (mostly somewhat believable), most of the straight sex was still shown as intercourse driven with the women mostly responsible any orgasms they'd have. Some of the scenes from Viv Thomas's Art of Sex series are the best straight porn I've seen but there aren't enough of them and they don't have setups. And so I segue into...
The third reason I watch more lesbian sex has to do with setups and story lines. Many people (those who read the reviews on http://www.lezlovevideo.com/ are probably familiar with Anon in Alabama, for example) complain about the bad writing in lesbian porn. Well, at least there's writing! Most straight porn either jumps right into the scene or has a minimal setup in which, usually, the woman comes onto the man who requires pretty much no seducing.
Now, as a man, I concede that most of us are usually ready for sex and just await an opportunity. But there are times when we're not feeling like it, don't want to betray our regular partner, feel that it would be inappropriate to have sex with a particular woman (Be honest guys, if Lily Carter came on to you, you'd probably be so intimidated that you might have a difficult time getting hard). In such cases, we'd need to be seduced and in straight porn, that pretty much never happens. Having a setup makes it easier to arrive at the mindset (voyeuristic or participatory) that allows me to get "into" the scene. People like TV shows and movies in which they like or, at least, can relate to some or all of the characters. Porn is no different - at least for me.
Some actresses (Brandi Love, Zoey Holloway, Julia Ann, Nina Hartley, etc.) can, to some extent, transcend the limitations of the way the straight porn format is usually constructed. But there aren't enough of them and even they aren't always successful. I don't think it's a coincidence that they're all relatively older and more experienced. And none of them ever seems like she's just doing a job - all appear to actively enjoy the experience, not just the orgasm and the paycheck.
The bottom line is that, as a straight man, I'd like to watch more straight porn than I do at present. And, if the scenes didn't become boring, I would.
