Thoughts Regarding Down-Voting

To whomever is in charge of this website,

It used to be that voting meant something. It took some effort to take an album set at a default 100% approval rating down to 0%. Now, that's as simple as 1 down-vote on 1 photo in an album containing any number from 1 to 1000 pictures or photos. I don't think that's right and I also think xhamster should take voting back to the way it was or modify it.

This is clearly not a democratic website where people can post anything they want even if it's legal. My suggestion is that voting is modified to be like Facebook or a similar forum-style website where the profile names of those that vote are shown. Using myself as an example, something like "anon8101 liked this" or "anon8101 thumbed down" or along those lines. Please do something about this bullshit and soon too. I know a couple of uploaders with great content that completely stopped uploading due to the frustration with voting and seeing what they thought was just 1 asshole going through their uploads and down-voting with glee. Maybe they're right in a way, maybe it's not worth adding content to this site and making you money for our time and effort in helping build the community and content on this website.

happy to agree it needs modifying suggest that to vote down you have to say why and who by... that would rule out the faceless jellies that down vote anon just cos they can

I agree that the voting / rating of albums is not right. I find it very frustrating that some down vote a pic due to the content, you can see the tags to know if it is something you are interested in. Don't give a pic a bad vote just be cause you do not like the subject. Don't like it? Don't look at it. By the way I love your mama bear albums.

Nah dude not a mod and I haven't blocked you and I agree with the principle of what ur saying just musing about most efficient way 2 go about it with least blowback potential Generally when messing with social sites or anything that has 2 aggregate alot of people i generally believe an initial level of "fuzziness" regarding personal details is best while still getting the same effect 4 example once u cross the threshold if u just go around down voting random enough stuff all your votes are then discounted or if specific that person is alerted that so and so just fucking hates ur stuff maybe u just get a warning and a label that you've been id'd as potential troll and secondary threshold 4'vote dumping and p2p id. With it all having ability 2 be overriddenby admin if persons determined 2 be legitimitally critical rather than just asshole

to Caged4Ever : Your stance is valid, some people would of course use the system in this way. As far as it being widespread, I don't think it would be. I don't think it would be widespread like that because uploaders wouldn't want their uploads removed. It makes their efforts a moot point. The ones with nothing to lose on their profiles would feel free to downvote spam content. The balance comes in being able to block them and in some cases, report them for troll behaviour or whatever. However, I recognise that you have a valid point and removal of the downvoting option altogether would solve future problems. I've been assuming that the downvote option serves a purpose on here, maybe having enough downvotes gets the content removed or something. Some content people upload truly is terrible. The cell phone amateur dick pix or like half a nipple and a whole armpit and all that shit that's of poor quality and taste deserves to be downvoted. As far as giving people who down vote some attention aka feeding the trolls, well, anyone doing anything to any of my uploads gets noticed by me. Upvotes, downvotes, comments, questions, and often times displaying my uploads in their favourites are all noticed by me. Some things stick out more than others, like downvotes as it applies to this conversation and any comments that show up on my newsfeed are of interest. If everything gets noticed and the bad things are complained about for once by me, I'm not sure that's a bad thing.

No, naming people who vote is just asking for a shitstorm. A never ending cycle of down voters trying to down vote each other on revenge trips for some petty belief that they were wronged. It's ok to not like something, a voting system where people are afraid to not like something for fear of revenge would be no better. If you really want a better system, remove the downvote entirely. You either vote to say you like it or you abstain for all other reasons, indifferent or disliked it doesn't matter...you just don't press the like button. Getting angry because of grief voting is precisely why it happens. You're giving them the recognition for their effort, You're validating their fun.

to _juno_ : Well, maybe having another voice that helps spread the message helps a tipping point. Whomever put this website together knows what they're doing and knows that the majority of the content uploaded on here comes from users like myself and many others. If all of us stop uploading in protest or something along those lines, maybe moving to another website altogether, I wonder if that might have an impact? I wonder if a silly threat like that is even necessary and maybe all that need be done is a clear and concise stance being taken by several prominent users all saying the same thing might have an impact? What do you think?

I can't disagree with what you said, but I've heard this all before. It's sad that we have been saying this for years. What is very obvious to us is completely ignored by this site. It is quite apparent that the owners of this site only pays attention to the money coming in and not on the site itself. No wonder it's in the condition that it's in.

There's trolls yes, but I believe the system changed at some point right around the time my last profile was deleted and I created this one where voting is stacked. I upload an album of 100 photos with a starting approval rate of 100%. In 3 hours, 1 downvote on 1 photo of that 100 takes the approval rating from 100% to 0% on the WHOLE album. That's 99 photos with a default 100% and 1 photo gone from 100% to 0% reflecting on the overall album from 100% approval to 0%. It. Makes. No. Sense. I don't know if someone is trolling me or if it's just the screwed up approval ratings. That's why I'd like to see if there's a pattern when it's revealed on who's doing the voting one way or another. Youtube does that for comments, Facebook for statuses and comments as well. I'm sure other social media sites have similar deals like on reddit/imgur and all that. Have I made some sense of where I'm coming from? If not, please respond and tell me what specifically I'm not doing I good job explaining. Likewise, if I've persuaded you to my view, also tell me/us. Feedback is welcomed and encouraged.

I agree with you about the illegal thing. I look at having both up and down as a kind of barometer of interest. Highly rated videos that get a lot of attention will likely result in me focusing on uploading those kinds of videos in the near future. Gotta give the people what they want! Someone else mentioned the idea of retaliation downvoting. That ain't my interest personally. I want to see if there's a pattern in downvoting from single accounts. Someone trolling me by downvoting even my fairly good quality stuff is already happening. If I can block them or publicise them for their bullshit downvote sprees, that's what I'm interested in doing.

to thrash_assassin : With respect to a fellow user, that's your opinion. This is mine. If ratings mean nothing, them they should me modified OR removed. Either they mean something or they don't. I'm coming from a Youtube, Facebook social media-type background in forums and such where voting does indeed mean something. I pay attention to voting still, despite the frustration I have around 1 down vote to 1 photo in 100 means from 100% approval upon uploading to 0% approval. The fact that the change is colourised only brings it further into focus. It's irritating that it used to make sense where each vote voted down that 1 photo, not the entire album and the default really was at 100% upon uploading. Used to be that 1 downvote and no upvotes on a photo meant a 50% approval rating, now it plummets straight to 0% rating. That's dumb as shit and needs to be reverted back or modified so it makes sense. If my complaining about it now is read by someone that can change it the deal, it's worth it to me.

I'm unable to respond to you, roark99. I suspect that either you blocked me for some reason or a mod is messing with me because I posted this. Whatever the deal is, this is my response specifically to you but could apply to anyone with your views. That's your opinion and I can respect that. Now I'll try to persuade you to my thinking, or at least share my opinion. This may not matter that much to you, but I'm a power uploader, which is to say that I have a lot of content uploaded and even more to upload. I've already spent considerable time gathering all the content but in a lot of cases I'm editing some of the content to a more upload-friendly size. Look at what's already been uploaded to get a scope of the scale I'm talking about in time and computing power. On that scale, and with a background of voting like Youtube, Facebook, etc. I understand the importance of voting. Voting reflects favourable content. If I have hundreds of videos and upload two, A featuring sloppy deepthroating and B featuring a 18-19 year old girl getting anal fucked, I pay attention to the voting as a barometer of focus. If the deepthroating vid does well, I'll focus on that type of video and upload more of them. Same for anal or anything else for that matter. Retaliation isn't what I'm interested in and as long as this site relies on uploaders like me to add content and draw views and advert revenues for xhamster, I think we should be able to make solid requests like this. The only people interested in retaliation would likely be the people that don't have any uploads, like yourself. I don't want my uploads removed. Do you understand where I'm coming from now, or have I rambled to a point where I've made myself unclear and foolish?

I don't think u need to attach people's names to vote list that just invites retaliation voting etc... But some identifier attached to someone who just down vote basically say 70% once u hit a threshold # isnt a bad idea

Anyone who's spent a decent amount of time on this site knows that ratings mean nothing. If the gallery or video has an interesting title & cover image then I'll check it out even if it's at 0%, and I know a lot of other users do the same.
