Masturbation on the rise, especially in last decad
I've always been interested in sexual health statistics since I work in the health field and I like sex. Thought it would be fun to share some interesting and uplifting stuff about masturbation over the generations-
The Gossard Big M Survey reveals what we all already know, masturbation is on the rise and very popular in recent generations. However, if you only look at the sexually healthy women from the survey (with no sexual dysfunction) which would only make sense, these numbers increase to 98%, 75%, 25%, respectively.
At the time of the study, in 2008, 92% of women aged 18 to 30 masturbated. Of those surveyed, 66% masturbated at least three times a week, with 20% masturbating at least 4 times a week. But of the women who masturbated and also used a vibrator, they masturbated more often than this so add 5 to 10% to these last stats.
The younger half of the age cohort were masturbating 25% more often than then did the older half of the cohort when they were their age. Contrary to what you would think, women who were in a sexual relationship were as likely to masturbate as often as than women who were not. ... I guess that means the women who also had sex in a relationship are very busy having orgasms ;o)
In another study, it was revealed that each generation born since 1900 has masturbated more than the previous generation- Intergenerational change in sex behavior. Once a generation establishes or adjusts to a masturbation frequency in youth, it remains steady into adulthood with only a gradual decline as health declines. Downey L., Arch Sex Behav. 1980.
More recent studies reveal this same upward trend in both masturbation and oral with the most dramatic rise in recent generations. There was a steady, slight arch upward across earlier generations. But and instead of leveling off or curving to horizontal like an "S", it actually accelerated, shooting steeply up. Previous to this, sex researches expected it had reached a plateau, would level off and remain there, like the "S" shape. To me, the graph now looks like an erection with the two recent generations ejaculating straight up ;o) It's nice to know they exceeded all expectations when it comes to cumming ;o) I'll try and paste in a graph to help explain.
Generation X experienced an increase of almost 25% over just the previous and Millennials another 25% over GenX. Likely factors are the relaxing of attitudes about masturbation, LGBT practices, and the growth of the Internet. Surprisingly, the frequency of full intercourse which rose in prior generations leveled off and remains steady in these two recent generations. So they are still enjoying as much intercourse as their predecessors, just masturbating more and receiving more oral.
Reversing the historic trend, a sharp rise in masturbation frequency has been observed among older generations just over the past decade. This is a departure from earlier studies showing frequency remains steady within each generation as it ages. The increase occurred mostly among healthy men over 60. Four factors gleaned from the surveys that contributed to the rise are; 1) a greater awareness of the health benefits of masturbation, 2) more free time after retirement to focus on personal development, 3) a renewed interest in sexual pleasure and desire for sexual lifestyles, 4) better diagnosis and treatment of sexual dysfunction resulting in an almost a ubiquitous use of sexual enhancement d**gs (ED d**gs and such). In surveys, more and more seniors have report their masturbation as a hobby and engage in mutual masturbation on a regular basis regardless of sexual orientation. Sadly, STDs have increased among this group because of increased sex and increased number of sex partners. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1639247/posts.
A 2008 study from the Cancer Council of Victoria revealed that "frequent" masturbation had a protective effect in preventing prostate cancer but it had to be frequent enough. Regardless of the presence of intercourse, men who masturbated more than 5 times a week (6 or more times) showed a dramatic decrease in risk for prostate cancer. Further, there was a dose response effect. When you look into the data, men who masturbated between 8 and 10 times a week experienced the greatest benefit but it leveled off beyond that. So we should masturbate daily with a few additional ejaculations for good measure, regardless of the amount of intercourse we enjoy.
Masturbation is now understood to be healthy, normal, and is even encouraged. "An orgasm a day" is a slogan in a brochure from the British health service, which is the minimum recommended for health and pleasure. It's good for you. How times are changing!
So masturbate, masturbate, masturbate.
