Shaw Brothers Interest Expanded
I'm expanding a bit on my love of Classic Shaw brothers kung fu flicks, because as of late I have been watching quite a bit of them, and thought I'd talk a bit about them.
Rza from the Wu-Tang Clan once compared regular classic kung fu movies, and classic Shaw brothers kung fu movies, to corn flakes, and frosted flakes, with good reason. Shaw brothers in it's hey day, had the majority of the best actors in kung fu world including Ti Lung, Chen Kuan Tai, Alexander Fu Sheng, Gordon Liu, Cheng Pei Pei, Jimmy Wang Yu, and many many more. Their sets, and costumes were the best out of any studios, and the studio produced the two godfathers of kung fu directors, Chang Cheh, and Lau Kar Leung. There were more directors, but they stood out the most.
Choreography in these movies can be very beautiful. The shots of choreography are much longer than current martial arts movies, and the use of real weapons are frequent. Lau Kar Leung, the director I spoke of was a master in Hung Gar Kung Fu, and started off as a choreographer for in many movies including Chang Cheh's films. His choreography in his own movies where from a purist of kung fu perspective, and was really good at what he did. He could turn an actor with minimal kung fu training, and make them look like masters. They were many other choreographers that worked at Shaw brothers, but his stood out. There is another choreographer, that took over on Chang Cheh's movies, after Lau Kar Leung took over, and wasn't a master in kung fu at all, but lived his life in the Peking Opera, and was very good at choreographing so very flashy sequences for Chang Cheh's movies, and his name was Philip Kwok.
I am gonna have to cut this short, because my roommate has to use my computer, but if you have seen these classic films, comment some of your favorites, and if you haven't seen any but want to get into it, talk to me, I'm fairly knowledgeable of the films, and I would like to know if any women get into these films, because I have never met any.
