My 50 favorite movies

Once again, stealing shamelessly (well, it's not really stealing since she told me to do it) from Ellenblake) here are the first 50 movies that popped into my head as my favorites. I've probably forgotten some and, when they pop into my head, I'll either add them or replace some that are already on the list. We'll see. In no particular order (except Bedazzled):

Bedazzled (the original with Dudley Moore and Peter Cook)

Princess Bride

Notting Hill

True Lies

Manchurian Candidate (the original with Frank Sinatra and Laurence Harvey)

Body Heat

Lord of the Rings (the trilogy but especially The Fellowship of the Ring)

Pretty Woman

Top Gun

Bourne Identity

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

Vertigo

Who Framed Roger Rabbit

The African Queen

The Graduate

Goldfinger

Die Hard 3

The Ten Commandments

A Night at the Opera

My Little Chickadee

Quigley Down Under

To Kill a Mockingbird

Romancing the Stone

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Bound

Payback

Heaven Can Wait (the version with Warren Beatty and Julie Christie)

Under the Tuscan Sun

The American President

His Girl Friday

How to Marry a Millioinaire

Sleuth

Undercover Blues

Roxanne

Three Faces of Eve

The Sting

Flashdance

What's New, Pussycat

Eye of the Needle

to Dark_Witch : I know - Alan Rickman and Morgan Freeman more than make up for a somewhat wooden Kevin Costner trying to sound English. Alan has never been more over-the-top-crazy evil than in this one. And, if you love him in his crazy roles, be sure to check out Quigley Down Under. If nothing else, you'll smile every time you hear the name "Roy".

So for the first time I watched Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves last night. I Really liked it. I probably would watched it ages ago if I realized Alan Rickman was in it. I loved him and still miss him. :(

to Gina_Gemini : It is my favorite - I love all the puns and sight gags - it's hard to object to Raquel Welch, in her prime, as Lilian Lust, the Babe with the Bust. If you do watch it, let me know what you think. The "unoriginal" one did present plenty of Elizabeth Hurley, in her prime - never a bad thing.

Bedazzled seems like your definite favorite. I have watched the "unoriginal" version and it was fun at the time. intrigued to check out your version too.

to Dark_Witch : Hey, thanks for checking out the list. I've got a pretty thick skin so telling me that you hate one of my movies won't bother me. But I am curious as to which one...and why. And curious as to which will make your list as well - I'm guessing T2, LotR, Bound, and Pirates.

I finally took the time to go through this. There several I have not seen on your list. But there several also that will make my list. I'm gonna do my own list after I get issue three of the geek blog done. There is also one movie on your list I don't like at all. LOL But I'm trying to be a good girl so i won't talk about your movie. Overall though looks like a great list and like beardedlion list I will use yours as a checklist of stuff to watch that I not seen.

Very true. When I first learned that they were wed, I was surprised. But like you, I have come to realize that they filled a need in each other. Oh... I just thought of two more for my list I will have to start on my top 100! :)

to beardedlion : I know. To the casual observer, Anne and Mel seem like a total mismatch. But obviously they both saw past the outer shell to the person inside. Hope for all nerds there. The 2000 year old man with Carl Reiner is priceless.

OH I absolutely agree in regards to the conversation. And Mel Brooks is an acquired taste to be sure. On the other hand he did woo and wed Ann Bancroft! She once said in an interview that she loved Mel. And every time he came home at night she would say to herself: "Let the fun begin!"

to beardedlion : OK, OK, maybe when I've got a little time, I'll give YF another look. Please let me know when your list is posted. And, if you're a Hackman fan, if you've never seen The Conversation, you must. It's a terribly bleak movie but the end is riveting.

to laurrren : My too. It is said that Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder fought tooth and nail over that film. The result is something special. Gene was able to rein in Mel's propensity to milk a joke to it's death. Perhaps the one exception is the "put the candle stick back!" scene. And the cast . . . Wow Gene Hackman in a throw-away scene!? Are you kidding!? Don't get me started! :)

to beardedlion : Well, you could join the party and do a list of your own. I have to assume that you wouldn't pick the same other 48 that I did. I've never seen Mister Destiny but I have seen Young Frankenstein and, like Blazing Saddles, it's a funny and good movie...but not one of my 50 favorites.

to laurrren : I'm not so sure about "Pirates of the Carribean" even though I am a huge fan of Johnny Depp. I would rather see Young Frankenstein and Mister Destiny. Other than that I wholeheartedly agree with your selections.

to nightskies : No problem - whenever you've got the time. Perhaps you and Paige could collaborate on a list or, you could even each do one, posting them as separate blogs. Either way, I'll look forward to seeing yours. Quigley down under is another underrated Western type movie as it's set mostly in Australia. And if offers the late, fabulous Alan Rickman as the villain, rather than Gene Hackman. If you've never seen it, I urge you to.

to talonequ : That is a good quote series, I was always partial to "no, no, no, you see it's a gun fight. We both have guns. We aim, we fire, you die." My turn indeed, well that should be a bit of fun. Although not for tonight, little too late for me. But I will be back online in a day or so (P returns, you know how it is) and I will post it then. I will have to think about it, but don't want to give it too much thought, it's the first ones that pop into mind if I recall.

to nightskies : Gene Hackman - "You're not good enough" Sharon Stone - "Today I am" So, it was Ellen who did her list and inspired me to do one. Then I suggested that Sara (XV-88) do one and she did. Now it's your turn. So, hop to it, and you may feel free to use any of our lists as suggestions or reminders.

We share more than a few favorites, great list. Terminator 2 has a special place in my heart (for obvious reasons) and is a very underrated movie. To Kill a Mockingbird, Dr. Strangelove, The Quick and the Dead (the most underrated Western ever), Goldfinger, Casablanca are all good. In fact I could list a lot more of yours that I enjoy greatly, you have very good taste at work here. Read what you said below about the Godfather and I have to agree. While it's unquestionably a great movie, it's one of those that one can content themselves with seeing once of twice.

to ellenblake : Well, North Face was an excellent movie that could have been superb had they deleted the sort-of love story and cut 20 minutes out of it. Even so, it was quite gripping. So, which others have you not seen. Bedazzled II was fairly mediocre other than the opportunity to enjoy Elizabeth Hurley, who has never looked better. You know how I like puns and Bedazzled I was stuffed with them.

to talonequ : Well actually I've seen Pussycat, Manchurian (both versions) and Bedazzled (both versions too). I'd say The Sting is in my Top 100 but not in my Top 50, that's why.

to ellenblake : As for those 10, let me guess - Eve, Eye of the Needle, Pussycat, Undercover, Sleuth, Bedazzled, Murder by Death, Topkapi, Sink the Bismarck, and Manchurian. Hey, you're cheering The Sting but you don't have it in yours. Turns out we overlap by two - T2 and Princess Bride. Now go check out Sara's list.

to XV-88BATTLESUIT : Hey, it's personal preference. There are a LOT of great movies that didn't make my list. Remember, it's my "favorites", not my "best". I've seen both Godfather 1 and 2 (preferred 1) but I had no desire to see them again. Thus, not a favorite. So, my dear, why not make a list of your own and we'll check out the overlap, if any. And, if you haven't already, check out Ellen's list: http://xhamster.com/user/ellenblake/posts/513059.html
