I have come to the conclusion that societies have a tendency to evolve towards authoritarianism and totalitarianism.
The reason can, in my opinion, to be determined from evolutionary psychology.
In so, the idea is as follows. It is the basic nature of human being to maintain or improve his relative position in social hierarchy.
As there is a difference between people's abilities, the result is, inevitably, economic and political hierarchy, in which the most successful are in the lead.
Democratic system is an attempt to smooth out differences and make society more equal by giving the ordinary person an opportunity to present their opinions.
