Hey I know it has been a long time, but I figured I would stop by an do a little update. For now my doll project is still on hold as I am gearing up to go at thing full tilt. But for now I thought why not have a little fun. This is my new Japanese friend from China Mitsuko. I ordered her from a company called Beautiful Dolls. She has volunteered to help me with my project going forward. http://pic20.pictu… Read more
New Doll head update
Sorry for the insanely huge space between updates but life has been crazy and I am just starting to catch my breath. So time to fill you all in on where the project stands now. I cast my first test head in straight urethane foam and was less than happy with the results. After some research I decided cast a skin into the mold and then fill it with foam. This worked well but during the time it took to get new casting mat… Read more
Doll head update
Sorry for the huge delay between posts, but some life related things took priority over my project. The delay caused another setback as the water based clay I used dried unevenly and cracked horribly. No matter how I tried to repair it I just could not be satisfied with how the patched up head looked. So I scrapped it and started over from scratch. This time I used an oil based clay. This has its own set of issues, but as long as you know how to get around them it's not a problem. The following pictures are… Read more
The doll project update 3 Doll head
So as usual life got in the way and I didn't get to start sculpting till this morning. I slapped some clay on an armature and started sculpting. As I said before I am loosely basing my doll head on the Dollfie Dream. This is what I have so far. It's still ruff and needs a few more hours of work but I think you can see what I am doing. I found the Dollfie Dream head to be a bit on the bulbous side. The head I am sculpting is a combination of Dollfie anatomy and human anatomy. The eyes on the Dollfie are more toward the lower third of the face. This gives the head an unusually large amount of… Read more
The doll project update 2
I have been working on the design for my dolls head for the past two days or so. I just don't like the way it looks right now. I have been thinking about alternate ways of making it and I think I am going to sculpt it. I will sculpt the head in clay and then make a silicon mold. Then cast it up in a two part cold foam. Once that is done I can decide if I want to paint it or skin it in fabric. Well that's all for now I need to get back to work. thedollmaker… Read more
The doll project update 1
Hi all this is the poseable skeleton I came up with for my anime style fabric doll project. Its constructed of aluminum, steel and nylon and has over 30 points of articulation. Once the head is on the doll will stand about 5 feet tall. I wanted the digits of my dolls fingers to be more well defined for intricate poses.… Read more
The Doll project
I'm starting to put the under foam on my first dolls body. The next step is the two layers of skin. I'm using felt for the under layer and nylon lycra for the outer. I started thinking about what anime characters I should base my first two dolls on. It's hard to decide because a lot of the characters I like don't look all that out of the ordinary. Part of what I am using my fist dolls for is advertising so they need to look impressive at first glance. I'm not concerned about the complexity of the costumes or props because I can make almost anything. It's more a case of what will look sex… Read more
